As much as we hear that Santa Fe and the rest of New Mexico is drying up there are still some great places to go where you can just jump right in and enjoy the water.
Let me list the top places to go to get wet that are within driving distance of Santa Fe.
Rio Grande River It is less that a one hour drive and you can be right in the middle of some great river rafting. There are many rafting companies in Santa Fe but may we suggest Known World Guides. They are very experienced, know the river better than most and even serve a great lunch and dinner.
Nambre Falls Recreation Site Yes we said falls. The waterfall is just a fifteen minute walk from the main area and the site offers fishing, camping and lake side picnicking. This recreation area is part of the Nambre Pueblo. Just like the river it is less than an hour away from Santa Fe.
Abiquiu Reservoir This is a real favorite with the locals and is fairly large for New Mexico. At 5,200 acre it can handle most boating activities and is a great place to swim.
El Vado Another great lake for all type of water activities. Camping, picnicking, fishing, boating, waterskiing, sailing and biking just to name a few and makes a great day trip adventure from Santa Fe.
Cochiti Lake Just southwest of Santa Fe there is a very nice lake that is part of the Santo Domingo Pueblo. This is a no wake lake so speed boating is out but it is great for windsurfing, sailing, kayaking and swimming.
Elephant Butte Lake This is the granddaddy of lakes in New Mexico and is about a two and a half hour drive from Santa Fe. This lake is so large it has three marinas that run year round. It is also one of the busiest lakes in New Mexico so before you go make sure you have a place to stay and that you stay on the look out for some crazy boaters.
In closing, New Mexico might not have a lot of water but the water it does have can really be a lot of fun. Just remember to have a good time and wear plenty of sun screen.
