Santa Fe Summer Activities for 2006

This summer in Santa Fe is very busy. So if you are planning a visit here this year you have much to choose from.

There are festivals and annual markets and great outdoor sports to enjoy in Santa Fe and the area. Something for everyone can be enjoyed in Santa Fe in the summer.

International Folk Art Market

On July 8 and 9, 2006 in the open air Milner Plaza at Museum Hill an abundance of authentic handcrafted folk art, international cuisine, and world music and dance can be experienced by all.

The festival will showcase 60 international master folk artists from around the world. They are from such places a Venezuela, Nigeria, Sweden, and Madagascar.

Antiquities Show and Sale

On July 7, 9 and 9th at the El Museo Cultural De Santa Fe will be this Santa Fe returning premiere event for the 9th year . On July 6 from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm the preview show will benefit The Animal Foundation of New Mexico .

At this show visitors can see American Country Furniture, American Indian Works, antique Books, French furniture, Jewelry, Paintings, Porcelain, Posters, Prints, Rugs, and Spanish Colonial works and more.

Indian Market

August 19 – 20 is when this year’s annual Indian Market occurs. It is the most anticipated event in Santa Fe every year. Since 1922 this market has been going on. There are almost 650 booths of authentic Native American art and crafts. Exhibitors must be of Native American descent or they cannot participate. This event draws 80,000 to 100,000 people a year.

Traditional Spanish Market

July 29 and 30 is the tie of the Traditional Spanish Market in the Plaza. This year is the market’s 53rd year. The artists and craftspeople work with over 15 mediums. Santos, tinwork, furniture, pottery, woodwork and weavings are just a few examples of what is available at this true celebration of traditional Spanish Arts.

Santa Fe Traditional Bluegrass Music Festival

August, 25, 26, 27, 2006 is when the bluegrass officiandos come to town to perform and listen to America’s oldest and original music style. The events this year include many national music acts performing at the Rodeo grounds. There are also contests, workshops, vendors, and festival foods.

Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival

July 16 – Aug. 28 The Chamber will feature more than 80 musicians in 42 concerts.

This event has evolved into a world renowned event that offers performances of chamber works as well as contemporary pieces, jazz standards and world music.

The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival offers FREE admission to open rehearsals at St Francis auditorium and the Lensic Performing Arts Center.

Santa Fe Opera

June 302 – August 26 The famous Santa Fe productions are known around the world. The setting in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains gives the opera attendees the sunset view and warm breezes of which Santa Fe’s summer weather is all about. This year French opera star Natalie Dessay will return to sing in “La sonnambula”.

Fiesta de Santa Fe

Sept 2 – 10 is when the celebrations of the oldest community festival in the US begins. This fiesta celebrates the resettlement of the Northern New Mexico territory in the late 1600s.There are many live performances of mariachi music, dances, celebration of Mass, and arts and crafts fair,a candlelight procession and the end of the week wraps up with the burning of Zozobra. This is the huge puppet (about 2 stories tall) that is celebrated as it burns and represents the gloom of the past year being burned away.
